Statistical Leadership and Governance

Strengthening governance, strategic direction, and leadership within statistical organisations is at the core of ORBICAP’s approach. Our aim is to empower organisations to produce official statistics by fostering a collaborative working culture, effective leadership, and robust governance structures.

At the World Statistics Congress 2023, a panel discussion summarised by Stephen Penneck et al. explored the evolving role of statistical leadership, which aligns with ORBICAP’s mission. Statistical leadership encompasses more than technical expertise; it includes strategic thinking, communication, and the capacity to inspire trust and collaboration. Leadership in statistics necessitates statisticians advocating for evidence-based decision-making, communicating complex concepts effectively, and combating misinformation.

Producing official statistics is a collective effort. Insightful managers and leaders guide teams across divisions, departments, and units to work seamlessly together. This approach is becoming increasingly relevant as new data sources are integrated into production processes. The availability and use of these data must be carefully coordinated and distributed across the organisation to ensure consistency, transparency, and maximum value. By promoting collaboration and aligning strategic goals, ORBICAP helps organisations navigate complexities and drive informed decision-making and sustainable growth.

Importantly, leadership is not confined to senior management. All statisticians can champion the value and integrity of official statistics, contributing to a culture of trust and innovation.
